Winners of environmental excellence awards announced
19 June 2006
Nikau Contractors Limited and Multiplex Constructions Limited were the major winners at this year's joint Auckland Regional Council and New Zealand Contractor's Federation (NZCF) Environmental Excellence Awards.

The winners were announced tonight during the NZCF Auckland branch's annual general meeting.The awards recognise and reward environmental excellence for organisations that achieve best practice in the field of environmental management of civil construction and related projects.

Multiplex Constructions Ltd was the overall winner in the over $10 million category for its work managing the Sylvia Park development. The site, a former World War II American Army base, contained considerable contamination including asbestos so Multiplex Constructions had to conduct a major investigation of the site and do daily monitoring.

Nikau Contractors Ltd, won the $2.5 million to $10 million category, for the cleaning of an Otahuhu site used previously for storage of fertilizers and manufacturing materials. During the project the company decontaminated eight buildings, which contained brittle asbestos and other forms of chemical contaminants.

Hiway Stabilizers Environmental Limited received a merit award, in the $2.5 million to $10 million category, for its Auckland Domain duck ponds sludge removal project. In the $10 million and over category merits awards were given to HEB Smithbridge, for its project on Waioura Peninsula to State Highway 1, and the other to Fletcher Construction Company Limited for its Northern bus way and Esmonde Road interchange project.

Auckland Regional Council Environmental Management Committee Chair Dianne Glenn said this year's entries were outstanding so the decision for the judges was a difficult one. "The Auckland Regional Council (ARC) was pleased to see such excellent innovations with regard to environmental management and believe that these awards promote such practices within the region as well as strengthen relationships within the industry."

NZCF Auckland Branch Executive member, Fraser Wyllie said the judging panel were particularly impressed with how the two winning projects managed the effects on the environment. They had all developed Environmental Management Plans, conducted workplace environmental training, and were carrying out recycling and reuse,"he said.

The Auckland branch of the New Zealand Contractor's Federation (NZCF) and ARC launched the Environmental Excellence awards in 2004.

Working Smarter AND Harder - Environmental and Resource Management

ISO14000 Certified

In 1999,  Nikau was accredited with the ISO14000 certification for it’s policies and practices for environmental and sustainable resource management.

Effective environmental management is given highest consideration within the company and both management and staff are committed to the protection of the environment.

The company has established procedures to identify the environmental aspects of it’s activities, with the objective to minimise any negative effect on the surrounding environment.  These include;

·         Emissions to air

·         Releases to water

·         Waste management

·         Contamination of land

·         Impact on surrounding communities

·         Use of raw materials and natural resources

The key principals of the system are;

1.       Firm management commitment to the principals and policies within the ERMS by providing a solid foundation for the system to work effectively.

2.       Regular review to determine the legislative requirements and environmental aspects associated with the company’s activities.

3.       Ongoing training of staff of the importance of environmental and resource awareness and guidelines and principals of the system coupled with assigning responsibilities and accountability.

4.       Establishing liquidity of information and communication between management, staff and other concerned parties on matters of environmental concern.

5.       Encouraging environmental considerations throughout all aspects of planning, including stipulated operating procedures.

6.       Establishing processes for achieving targeted objectives.

7.       Providing appropriate and sufficient resources, including human resources and specialised skills, technology and financial resources.

8.       Internal and external system of review, monitoring and audit to evaluate performance and to identify opportunities for continued improvement.

9.       Establishing procedures to identify the potential for and respond to accidents and emergency situations and for the prevention and mitigation of, the environmental impacts that may be associated with them.

The company has for many years implemented a waste reduction and management policy for it’s sites.  Vast increases in waste materials lead to greater increases in disposal costs.  Where it is possible, the company attempts to salvage a minimum of 80% of a demolished structure.  This target has been achieved through the implementation of specialist plant and equipment (such as our rotational shears, timber machining & recycling facilities, concrete crushing plant and the Hogzilla Monster Tubgrinding facility) in conjuction with emloyee devotion through specialist training and incentives to meet our targets, as well has been made viable through the selling of these products from three sites in Auckland and Waikato regions.

Specialised silenced excavator and bobcat attachments minimise noise and dust pollution, vibration and nuisance to the community.  Plant and equipment are maintained to the highest standards to minimise harmful emissions, with all chemical waste products from the company’s service depot being collected for safe disposal, or recycling, by suppliers. Controlled work practices are implemented during the removal of hazardous or toxic materials to ensure safety remains optimum, and clear paper trails maintained to show correct disposal of these materials within local government and regional council regulations.

High standards of housekeeping are a matter of policy on the company’s sites, ensuring the sites are maintained in a clean and orderly manner for both safety and productivity.
