Domestic Asbestos Removal
Nikau Contractors Ltd, removes asbestos products from domestic dwellings, such as textured ceilings and exterior cladding, We also specialise in sampling and testing to verify if your home is contaminated with ACM (Asbestos Containing Material), if you suspect you have asbestos within your home, here are some practical tips to assist you in your decision making.
- Nikau Contractors DOES NOT recommend any person attempt to remove asbestos products unless they are suitably trained to do so.
- If in doubt, consult your local OSH office, certified removal contractor such as Nikau Contractors ltd or refer to the regulations (link below)
- The health risks associated with asbestos materials is directly related to the condition of the materials and the exposure levels to people. If the materials are undamaged and you are not going to be doing any alterations or repairs to the area(s) affected, there may be no reason for you to have the materials removed, which can be a costly, time consuming and disruptive process. Good judgement needs to be exercised.
- If you wish to test the product yourself for the presence of asbestos, ensure that you and your family are safe from exposure. Your own and your family's health and safety is your main priority by ensuring that all family members and pets are not within the area(s) while you are taking samples(s).
- You can purchase a half face mask with P1 or P2 filters from your local safety shop for around NZ$40.00. The type of filter is conditional on what type of material you will be working with - P2 = fiberous (textured ceilings) or P1 = non fiberous (asbestos mixed with cement based products such as cladding);
- Ensure that you wear appropriate personal protective equipment : cover your eyes, wear gloves.
- If removing materials from textured ceilings, ensure that you have a sturdy, firm and level footing.
- For sampling textured ceiling, use a damp sponge and carefully WET a small sample(s) area (located in an inconspicuous part of your home).
- Using a knife or wallpaper scaper, scrap a small amount (about the size of a 10 cent peice), ensuring to scrap some of the adhesive cement (where asbestos is most likely found) into a clean plastic bag or container and seal it immediately.
- For cladding, break off a small piece and seal it immediately.
- Ensure that you thoroughly clean up any materials that may have fallen and seal your face mask in a plastic bag - your contractor can properly dispose of the used filters and pre-filters if the sample is positive. If you use a vaccum to clean any small amounts of dust caused, dispose of the bag immediately.
There are two labratories in New Zealand capable of testing for asbestos products. We recommend Dowdell and Associates, located in Penrose, Auckland.
If your sample has returned a positive result, you can employ a contractor to remove the effected materials. Ensure that your contractor is certified (holds an OSH restricted ticket) to verify he or she has the appropriate knowledge and expertise to safely remove the material, holds appropriate insurances (in case of damage etc) and can provide you with at least three references for your own personal security.
The information above is meant to provide guidance to homeowners in New Zealand. Nikau Contractors does not accept any responsibility for the accuracy of the above information. Commercial and Industrial Asbestos Removal Service.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring minerial which was utilised for it’s durability and fire resistant qualities. Asbestos is a common feature amongst many commercial and even domestic buildings, in particular those built between the 1930’s and 1970’s, although use of Asbestos continued through to the middle 1980's. Common products containing Asbestos (for both commercial and domestic properties) include;
· Asphalt roofing material
· Building Wall Cladding and cement wallboard
· Super Six Roofing
· Acoustic Ceiling material
· Sprayed on Fire-Proofing Insulation
· Water Heater Vent seams
· Textured and suspended ceilings
· Pipe Lagging (for insulation)
· Tile or Lino Flooring adhesives
In New Zealand, there are three common forms of asbestos found (so named and coloured from the area from which it was mined);
· Blue - Crocidolite
· Brown - Amosite
· White – Chrysotile
Asbestos fibres, when inhaled, can cause serious scarring to the lung tissues and can be cancerous. Symptoms for many asbestos related diseases often do not become evident until fifteen to twenty years after exposure.
If you suspect you have asbestos products in your workplace or commercial property, we can provide you with an initial on-site assessment, with safe collection of samples, arrange for testing and if returning a positive result, safely remove and dispose of asbestos building materials within OSH regulations and guidelines.

Around the world, there is a growing awareness and concerns within communities affected by contaiminated materials.
Although some of these materials may occur naturally within the ecosystem, many do not, or are found in concentrated levels far above what is considered normal for the area.
Many of these contaminates are residues from historial uses of the land, such as manufacturing and storeage of chemicals. Thier run off into the environment can cause serious, long term, negative effects on the surrounding communities, in terms of human, plant, and animal damage. This contamination is often not identified until the materials have leached into subground water systems, which can often take many years to occur.
Nikau works in conjunction with territorial authorities and government bodies for the effective and safe removal of such contaminants and the monitoring process's identifying and tracking such contamination.
Previous contracts have involved the safe cleanup of petroleum hydrocarbons (caused mainly by leaking underground storage tanks) and heavy metals such as cadmium and lead (found in common household batteries) and remediation of these sites. We have also been involved in the clean up and remediation of timber milling sites, where preservatives and antisapstain chemicals contaminate soil and leach into groundwater.
Our Clean-Up service is based on, and works in conjunction with, Health and Safety Guidelines on the Cleanup of Contaminated Sites (OSH Publication) and Ministry for the Environment Guidelines for Assessing and Managing Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Sites

Bird Guano Product Removal Service.
Nikau Contractors were pioneers in the identification of, and development of systems to remediate, the largely unknown and unacknowleged problems caused by bird guano (waste). There is combination of serious respiratory diseases that can be transferred from wild birds (such as pigeons) to humans via inhalation. These diseases include the following;
-
Histoplasmosis : very common fungal infection amongst wild birds. Spread to human by inhalation of its spores found in the bird’s droppings (direct from the droppings or from disturbance of contaminated soil). Primary result of Histoplasmosis is acute respiratory illness. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, rashes and joint pain or stiffness.
-
Blastomycosis : fungal infection that is spread to humans through inhalation (direct from bird droppings or from disturbance of contaminated soil). Primary effect is inflamed lesions to the lungs and skin. The disease subsequently disseminates into the bones, liver, spleen and central nervous system. This disease is often found in conjunction with Histoplasmosis, Tuberculosis, Bronchogenic carcinoma or severe pulmonary disease.
.
Both diseases are extremely serious with Blastomycosis having NO CURE.
As with asbestos products, it is vital that all bird by-products and contaminated soils be removed and disposed of only by professionals in monitored environments.
At Nikau, we can safely remove of and dispose of all avarian by-products using containment and removal techniques similar to those employed for asbestos and hazardous chemical removal.
